Capture Convos - How Capture Came to Be

Greetings! I’m so glad you took some time out of your busy day to check us out! My name is Julie Sumner. I am one of the founders and CEO of Capture Solutions, LLC. I thought I’d start off our blog series by sharing with you how Capture - our digital documentation system - came to be.


To do so, I have to share a bit about myself. For the last 15 years, I have been a practicing attorney in Cleveland, Ohio. I spent the better part of my legal career in litigation - labor and employment litigation to be exact, What does that mean? It means that I defended employers when they got sued for harassment, discrimination, wrongful termination, retaliation, etc. I also defended employers when they were investigated and/or fined by OSHA, as well as during and through tragic accidents such as severe injuries, amputations, and fatalities - every employer’s worst nightmare.


One of the challenges so often encountered in my time as a litigator was trying to defend a case when there was little to no documentation supporting my client’s actions. It wasn’t that my clients didn’t know they should be documenting workplace issues, or that they were making a conscious, deliberate choice to not document. It was more that they just hadn’t gotten around to it, given the 10 million other things they had to do that day.


With my construction clients, a big part of the reason things didn’t get documented is because it was simply inconvenient. Most of my clients still relied primarily on pen and paper to document. Yet, out on a dusty, dirty construction site, that’s not the most practical method. Also, obviously, construction is a hands-on job, so most field employees are using their hands - not carrying around a pen and paper. So, managers would tell themselves: “I’ll write this all down when the shift is over and I’m back at the trailer,” or “I’ll do it tonight when I get home.” But, after working 12+ hours, “I’ll do it when I get home” typically led to “I’ll do it tomorrow”, which typically led to it never getting documented.


I understand this - heck, I’ve lived it in my own career and I advise people to document for a living! I kept thinking that there has to be a better way. What if there was an app that allowed the folks in the field to quickly and easily document almost any workplace issue? And what if that documentation immediately synced to the Cloud, so headquarters could access the information in real time? How much safer and more productive could we make workplaces?


And that is how Capture came to be. I spoke the idea out loud, found the right team to help me make it a reality, and now we’re ready to start sharing it with all of you!
